If you use a Linux computer you will know all about free software, so this is mainly aimed at those of us who use Windows or other operating systems that cost.

Firefox Web Browser

If you are currently using Internet Explorer, then using Firefox instead will protect you from viruses no end. You have the option of ‘Add ons’ where you can install facilities to use within the browser such as post it notes, Stock checkers etc. The theme can also be changed to look flowery, autumnal, Sci-fi. Add ons are generally Firefox approved and are not invasive like some Internet explorer toolbars

Thunderbird [ links to UK download version ]

Like Firefox it is robust at defending against viruses, and has a host of add-ons available. Add-ons are available to import emails from Live-Mail and other email systems, and lots of other stuff. The Lighting extension adds a calendar and task manager

Open Office

Word processor, spreadsheet, database client, presentation designer. Behaves just like it’s Microsoft Office counter part, and is able to load and save Microsoft file formats.

Google Docs

Word processor, spreadsheet and all the rest editable online. It is ridiculous how good these tools are. Documents can be edited by multiple people at once, and you can see what the other is doing. It is also handy to see you diary / calendar from home, work or wherever else you are.
